Linework: Ready for the second appointment dedicated to the “Magnifiche 20”, with the artist Cristina Stifanic.
Linework: Let’s talk about you, Cristina. Impertinent and straight question: how have you become an artist?
Cristina: I don’t know who was born before, Cristina or the artist. I believe that everyone has a calling and when we try to separate it from our identity, we get sick. After my graduation in Computer Science and a 10 year long career in prestigious multinational tech corporations, I realized that I cannot express my creativity as much as I wanted.
Then, I decided to delve into my passion for art attending painting techniques classes at the Academy of Applied Arts in Milan and start my artistic career.
I enjoyed creating images on my computer and I didn’t feel the need to express myself on canvas, but the market wasn’t ready for digital art so I have adopted a hybrid technique: to realize digital pieces, print them on canvas or fine art paper and enrich them with my painting interventions. I have started to propose myself to contemporary art galleries, museums and artistic events during the Biennale in Venezia, cultural foundations and Italian embassies in Europe and Asia.
My series of paintings “DIABOLIK POP IKON”, inspired by the back covers of Diabolik comic series, has given me my actual visibility on the contemporary art market. I have elected Diabolik as the black angel of Pop Art, as René Magritte did with Fantômas at the beginning of XX century.
Having a curious and multifaceted personality, I have always tended to have a liquid approach between art and innovative technologies and, since NFT has approached the market, I have started to express myself through this powerful and charming tool.
Linework: Today we live in a world where everything seems to be art but we risk that, at the end of the day, almost nothing is. What is your vision of Art and what should be, as far as you are concerned, the role of the artist in today’s society?
Cristina: Contemporary art must challenge conventions and push the limits of perception and human imagination. This is often achieved through unconventional techniques and materials that allow the artist to explore new forms of expressions, going beyond the traditional outputs of art.
Many contemporary artists focus on representation of social inequalities, of injustice, of discrimination and contradictions of the society. This is accomplished by pieces that offer a critical and aggravating comment on reality, inciting consideration and public discussion.
Personally, I believe that artists should give a content to their own time period, rather than simply express the content of an era. This way, contemporary art can become a tool of social and cultural change, offering an alternative vision of the world and the social dynamics. History has shown that, even during the hardest and most dramatic periods of humanity, beauty and art have been able to emerge and inspire people. In this moment of my life, art is becoming a form of resistance and expression of hope in humanity itself.
Linework: Let’s circle back to our “Magnifiche”. Here is the second serie of Mona Lisas. Where do they come from? What is their story?
Ascoli
The Mona Lisa from Ascoli captures you with its mysterious glance, its ancient and elegant charm wraps you up like a silk scarf and takes you into a world of art and beauty.
The towers that stand out against the sky seem to challenge the clouds and their magnificence makes you feel small but, at the same time, instills in you a sensation of wonder and surprise. The cobbled roads and the stones that are made up of can tell stories from good old times and make you feel part of them.
Como
There is a hidden treasure on the bottom of the lake, waiting for somebody to find it and redeem it. Maybe a chest full of golden coins, maybe a magic potion or a message in a bottle that contains an ancient secret. At the end of it, maybe the true treasure is the emotion that comes out of the eyes of the Mona Lisa from Como, while she admires the beauty of the lake that every day reinvents itself with its light and its radiance. This lake gives us deep and intense emotions, without asking anything more than to love it and respect it.
Cagliari
Haughty and proud of its own capability to keep its identity throughout the centuries, the Mona Lisa from Cagliari invites us to dive into its beauty and be seduced by its soul, just as the angels did, coming down from the sky to discover their slice of heaven on Earth. And when the sun dives into the water of the Angel’s Gulf and the sun is setting, Cagliari becomes even more magical, as it wants to reveal its deepest secrets to the wary listeners only.

Teodolinda passed from here. Her presence has left a permanent sign in the story of the city, thanks to her enlightened mind and her charity. Before her, Hercules, demigod with untamed courage, forged his weapons in this land, leaving a trace of strength and power. Here, where the lion became legend, the majestic Mona Lisa from Brescia, with her golden mane, keeps watching over a city that still has a lot to narrate.
Reggina
Everytime that a ray of sun strokes the face of the Mona Lisa from Reggio Calabria, she gives a smile of joy and her crystal clear eyes, sea coloured, grab us and take us in an unforgettable trip among the bright colors of her streets and the intense smell of citruses and flowers.
Linework: In art, reflection of contemporary society, women suffer many difficulties to stand out. What are these difficulties that a woman can encounter in pursuing a career as an artist? What could be done to improve this situation?
Cristina: Sadly in Italy (and not only), female artists are hugely under-represented in the museums, the public and private foundations, in galleries and exhibitions, in the most prestigious auctions and their pieces are often considered less intense or interesting than the ones from the male artists.
Furthermore, many female artists, myself included, keep facing many difficulties in finding loans and support in their institutional projects.
The censorship towards female artists has been the only solution for centuries and, as we can all imagine, has brought to Humanity a loss of a great amount of pieces of art with great historical and cultural value. As an activist artist, it is my duty to fight censorship and gender discrimination in the world of art, so that the artistic and cultural heritage of the Humanity can fully reflect the voices and the visions of all the people, despite their gender. This way only we can guarantee that our artistic legacy will keep inspiring future generations.

Pronti per il secondo appuntamento dedicato alle Magnifiche 20 in compagnia dell’artista Cristina Stifanic.
Linework: Parliamo un po’ di te, Cristina. Domanda diretta e impertinente: come sei diventata un’artista?
Cristina: Non so chi sia nata prima, se Cristina o l’artista. Credo che tutti abbiamo una vocazione e quando cerchiamo di separarla dalla nostra identità, ci ammaliamo. Dopo la laurea in Informatica ed una carriera manageriale di circa 10 anni presso prestigiose multinazionali del tech mi sono resa conto che non riuscivo a esprimere la mia creatività come avrei voluto.
Ho deciso di approfondire la mia passione per l’arte frequentando corsi di tecniche pittoriche presso l’Accademia delle Arti Applicate di Milano e dare così inizio alla mia carriera artistica.
Mi piaceva elaborare immagini al computer e non sentivo il bisogno di esprimermi sulla tela, ma il mercato non era pronto per l’arte digitale così ho adottato una tecnica ibrida: realizzare le opere in digitale, stamparle su tela o carta fine art ed arricchirle con miei interventi pittorici. Ho cominciato a propormi alle gallerie d’arte contemporanea, musei, eventi artistici durante la Biennale di Venezia, fondazioni culturali ed ambasciate italiane in Europa ed in Asia.
La mia serie di dipinti “DIABOLIK POP IKON”, ispirata alle quarte di copertina del fumetto Diabolik, è stata quella che mi ha dato visibilità nel mercato dell’arte contemporanea. Ho eletto Diabolik come l’angelo nero della Pop Art come fece René Magritte con Fantômas agli inizi del 900.
Avendo una personalità curiosa e poliedrica tendo, da sempre, ad avere un approccio liquido tra arte e tecnologie innovative e da quando gli NFT si sono affacciati sul mercato ho iniziato ad esprimermi anche attraverso questo potente ed affascinante strumento.
Linework: Viviamo oggi in un mondo dove tutto sembra poter essere arte ma rischiamo che alla fine quasi nulla lo sia. Quale è la tua visione dell’Arte e quale dovrebbe essere, secondo te, quindi il ruolo dell’artista nella società odierna?
Cristina: L’arte contemporanea ha il ruolo di sfidare le convenzioni e spingere i limiti della percezione e dell’immaginazione umana. Questo viene spesso raggiunto attraverso l’utilizzo di tecniche e materiali non convenzionali che permettono agli artisti di esplorare nuove forme di espressione, andando oltre le forme tradizionali dell’arte.
Molti artisti contemporanei si concentrano sulla rappresentazione delle disuguaglianze sociali, delle ingiustizie, delle discriminazioni e delle contraddizioni della società. Questo viene fatto attraverso opere che offrono un commento critico e provocatorio sulla realtà, stimolando la riflessione e la discussione pubblica.
Personalmente, ritengo che gli artisti debbano dare un contenuto alla propria epoca, piuttosto che semplicemente esprimere il contenuto di un’epoca. In questo modo, l’arte contemporanea può diventare un mezzo di cambiamento sociale e culturale, offrendo una visione alternativa del mondo e delle dinamiche sociali. La storia ci dimostra che, anche nei momenti più difficili e drammatici dell’umanità, la bellezza e l’arte sono state in grado di emergere e di ispirare le persone. In questo momento della mia vita, l’arte sta diventando una forma di resistenza e di espressione di speranza nell’umanità stessa.
Linework: Torniamo alle nostre magnifiche. Ecco la seconda serie. Cosa ci puoi dire di loro? Da dove arrivano? Qual è la loro storia?
Ascoli
La Monnalisa di Ascoli ti cattura con il suo sguardo misterioso, il suo fascino antico ed elegante ti avvolge come una sciarpa di seta e ti trasporta in un mondo di arte e di bellezza.
Le torri che svettano verso il cielo sembrano sfidare le nuvole e la loro maestosità ti fa sentire piccolo ma al tempo stesso, ti infonde una sensazione di meraviglia e di stupore. Le strade acciottolate e le pietre che le compongono sanno raccontare storie di altri tempi e ti fanno sentire parte di esse.
Como
C’è un tesoro nascosto in fondo al suo lago, aspetta che qualcuno lo trovi e lo riscatti.
Forse un forziere di monete d’oro, forse una pozione magica o un messaggio in bottiglia che contiene un segreto antico. Ma forse il vero tesoro è l’emozione che si legge negli occhi della Monnalisa di Como, mentre ammira la bellezza del lago che ogni giorno si rinnova con la sua luce e il suo splendore. Questo specchio d’acqua ci offre emozioni intense e profonde, senza chiederci altro che di amarlo e di rispettarlo.
Cagliari
Fiera ed orgogliosa della sua capacità di aver mantenuto la propria identità nel corso dei secoli, la Monnalisa di Cagliari, ci invita ad immergerci nella sua bellezza e a lasciarci conquistare dalla sua anima, proprio come fecero gli angeli, che scesero dal cielo per scoprire il loro angolo di Paradiso sulla terra. E quando il sole si tuffa nell’acqua del Golfo degli Angeli, e cala la sera, Cagliari diventa ancora più magica, come se volesse svelare i suoi segreti più intimi solo a chi sa ascoltarla.
Brescia
Di qui passò Teodolinda, regina la cui presenza ha lasciato un segno indelebile nella storia della città, grazie anche al suo pensiero illuminato ed alla sua carità. Prima di lei, Ercole, semidio dal coraggio indomito, ha forgiato le sue armi in questa terra, lasciando un’impronta di forza e potenza. Qui, dove il Leone è diventato leggenda, la maestosa Monnalisa di Brescia, con la sua dorata criniera, continua a vegliare su una città che ha ancora tanto da raccontare.
Reggina
Ogni volta che un raggio di sole accarezza il volto della Monnalisa di Reggio Calabria, lei regala un sorriso di gioia ed i suoi occhi cristallini, colore del mare, ci rapiscono per portarci in un viaggio indimenticabile tra i colori vivaci delle sue strade ed il profumo intenso di agrumi e fiori.
Sembra sussurrare di lasciarci sorprendere dalla sua piccantezza, perché non si può gustare appieno la vita senza un po’ di sfida.
Linework: Nell’arte, specchio della società contemporanea, le donne riscontrano tante difficoltà ad emergere. Quali sono queste difficoltà che incontra una donna che vuole fare carriera nell’arte? Cosa si potrebbe fare per migliorare la situazione?
Cristina: Tristemente in Italia (e non solo), le donne artiste sono sottorappresentate nei musei, nelle fondazioni pubbliche e private, nelle gallerie e nelle mostre, presso le aste più prestigiose, e spesso i loro lavori sono considerati meno intensi o interessanti rispetto a quelli degli artisti maschi. Inoltre, molte artiste, presente inclusa, continuano ad affrontare difficoltà nel trovare finanziamenti e sostegno per i loro progetti istituzionali.
La censura nei confronti delle artiste è stata l’unica opzione per secoli e, come possiamo immaginare, ha portato l’Umanità alla perdita di una grande quantità di opere d’arte di valore storico e culturale inestimabile. Da artista attivista, è mio dovere combattere la censura e le discriminazioni di genere nel mondo dell’arte, affinché il patrimonio artistico e culturale dell’Umanità possa riflettere pienamente le voci e le visioni di tutte le persone, indipendentemente dal loro genere. Solo così potremo garantire che la nostra eredità artistica continui ad ispirare le generazioni future.

Linework: Давайте поговорим о вас, Кристина. Непринужденный и прямой вопрос: как вы стали художником?Кристина: Я не знаю, кто родился раньше, Кристина или художник. Я считаю, что у каждого человека есть призвание, и когда мы пытаемся отделить его от нашей личности, мы заболеваем. После окончания университета по специальности “Компьютерные науки” и 10-летней карьеры в престижных международных технологических корпорациях я поняла, что не могу выразить свои творческие способности в той мере, в какой мне хотелось бы.
Тогда я решил углубиться в свою страсть к искусству, посещая занятия по технике живописи в Академии прикладного искусства в Милане, и начать свою творческую карьеру.
Мне нравилось создавать изображения на компьютере, и я не чувствовал необходимости выражать себя на холсте, но рынок не был готов к цифровому искусству, поэтому я принял гибридную технику: создавать цифровые работы, печатать их на холсте или бумаге для изобразительного искусства и обогащать их своими живописными интервенциями. Я начал предлагать себя галереям современного искусства, музеям и художественным мероприятиям во время Биеннале в Венеции, культурным фондам и посольствам Италии в Европе и Азии.

АСКОЛИ
Мона Лиза из Асколи покоряет вас своим загадочным взглядом, ее древнее и элегантное очарование окутывает вас, как шелковый шарф, и уносит в мир искусства и красоты.
Башни, выделяющиеся на фоне неба, словно бросают вызов облакам, их великолепие заставляет вас почувствовать себя маленьким, но в то же время вызывает ощущение удивления и неожиданности. Мощеные дороги и камни, из которых они сложены, могут рассказать истории старых добрых времен и заставить вас почувствовать себя их частью.
КОМО:
На дне озера спрятано сокровище, которое ждет, чтобы кто-то нашел его и выкупил. Кроме того, многие художники-женщины, в том числе и я, продолжают сталкиваться со многими трудностями в поиске кредитов и поддержки своих институциональных проектов.
Цензура в отношении женщин-художников была единственным решением на протяжении веков и, как мы все можем себе представить, принесла человечеству потерю огромного количества произведений искусства, имеющих большую историческую и культурную ценность. Как художник-активист, я считаю своим долгом бороться с цензурой и гендерной дискриминацией в мире искусства, чтобы художественное и культурное наследие человечества могло полностью отражать голоса и видение всех людей, несмотря на их пол. Только так мы сможем гарантировать, что наше художественное наследие будет вдохновлять будущие поколения.

Listos para la segunda ronda de las “Magnifiche 20” en compañía de la artista Cristina Stifanic.
Linework: Hablemos un poco de ti, Cristina. Pregunta directa e impertinente: ¿cómo te convertiste en artista?
Cristina: No sé quién nació primero, si Cristina o el artista. Creo que todos tenemos una vocación y cuando intentamos separarla de nuestra identidad, enfermamos. Tras licenciarme en Informática y una carrera directiva de unos 10 años en prestigiosas empresas tecnológicas multinacionales, me di cuenta de que no podía expresar mi creatividad como quería.
Decidí profundizar en mi pasión por el arte asistiendo a cursos de técnicas pictóricas en la Academia de Artes Aplicadas de Milán y comenzar así mi carrera artística.
Me gustaba procesar imágenes en el ordenador y no sentía la necesidad de expresarme sobre lienzo, pero el mercado no estaba preparado para el arte digital, así que adopté una técnica híbrida: crear las obras digitalmente, imprimirlas sobre lienzo o papel para bellas artes y enriquecerlas con mis propias intervenciones pictóricas. Empecé a proponerme a galerías de arte contemporáneo, museos, eventos artísticos durante la Bienal de Venecia, fundaciones culturales y embajadas italianas en Europa y Asia.
Mi serie de pinturas “DIABOLIK POP IKON”, inspirada en las cuartas portadas del cómic Diabolik, fue la que me dio visibilidad en el mercado del arte contemporáneo. Elegí a Diabolik como el ángel oscuro del Pop Art, como hizo René Magritte con Fantômas a principios del siglo XX.
Al tener una personalidad curiosa y polifacética, siempre he tendido a tener un enfoque líquido entre el arte y las tecnologías innovadoras, y desde que NFT apareció en el mercado, también he empezado a expresarme a través de esta poderosa y fascinante herramienta.
Linework: Vivimos hoy en un mundo en el que todo parece arte, pero corremos el riesgo de que al final casi nada lo sea. ¿Cuál es su visión del Arte y cuál cree que debe ser el papel del artista en la sociedad actual?
Cristina: El arte contemporáneo tiene la función de desafiar las convenciones y ampliar los límites de la percepción y la imaginación humanas. Esto se consigue a menudo mediante el uso de técnicas y materiales poco convencionales que permiten a los artistas explorar nuevas formas de expresión, yendo más allá de las formas artísticas tradicionales.
Muchos artistas contemporáneos se centran en la representación de las desigualdades sociales, las injusticias, la discriminación y las contradicciones de la sociedad. Lo hacen a través de obras que ofrecen un comentario crítico y provocador de la realidad, estimulando la reflexión y el debate públicos.
Personalmente, creo que los artistas deben dar contenido a su época, en lugar de limitarse a expresar el contenido de una época. De este modo, el arte contemporáneo puede convertirse en un medio de cambio social y cultural, ofreciendo una visión alternativa del mundo y de la dinámica social. La historia nos demuestra que, incluso en los momentos más difíciles y dramáticos de la humanidad, la belleza y el arte han sido capaces de surgir e inspirar a la gente. En este momento de mi vida, el arte se está convirtiendo en una forma de resistencia y una expresión de esperanza en la propia humanidad.

Ascoli
La Monnalisa de Ascoli te atrapa con su mirada misteriosa, su encanto antiguo y elegante te envuelve como un pañuelo de seda y te transporta a un mundo de arte y belleza.
Las torres que se elevan hacia el cielo parecen desafiar a las nubes y su majestuosidad te hace sentir pequeño pero, al mismo tiempo, te infunde un sentimiento de maravilla y asombro. Las calles empedradas y las piedras que las componen cuentan historias de otros tiempos y te hacen sentir parte de ellas.
Como
Hay un tesoro escondido en el fondo del lago, esperando a que alguien lo encuentre y lo canjee. Tal vez un cofre lleno de monedas de oro, tal vez una poción mágica o un mensaje en una botella que contiene un antiguo secreto. Al final, quizá el verdadero tesoro sea la emoción que brota de los ojos de la Gioconda de Como, mientras admira la belleza del lago que cada día se reinventa con su luz y su resplandor. Este lago nos regala emociones profundas e intensas, sin pedirnos nada más que amarlo y respetarlo.

Cada vez que un rayo de sol acaricia el rostro de la Monnalisa de Reggio Calabria, nos regala una sonrisa de alegría y sus ojos cristalinos, del color del mar, nos embelesan para llevarnos a un viaje inolvidable a través de los vibrantes colores de sus calles y el intenso aroma de los cítricos y las flores.
Parece susurrarnos que nos dejemos sorprender por su picardía, porque no se puede disfrutar plenamente de la vida sin un pequeño desafío.
Linework: En el arte, reflejo de la sociedad contemporánea, a las mujeres les resulta muy difícil emerger. ¿Cuáles son esas dificultades a las que se enfrenta una mujer que quiere hacer carrera en el arte? ¿Qué se podría hacer para mejorar la situación?
Cristina: Lamentablemente, en Italia (y en otros países), las mujeres artistas están infrarrepresentadas en museos, fundaciones públicas y privadas, galerías y exposiciones, en las subastas más prestigiosas, y sus obras suelen considerarse menos intensas o interesantes que las de los artistas masculinos. Además, muchas artistas, incluidas las actuales, siguen teniendo dificultades para encontrar financiación y apoyo para sus proyectos institucionales.
La censura de las mujeres artistas ha sido la única opción durante siglos y, como podemos imaginar, ha llevado a la Humanidad a la pérdida de una gran cantidad de obras de arte históricas y culturales de valor incalculable. Como artista activista, es mi deber luchar contra la censura y la discriminación de género en el mundo del arte, para que el patrimonio artístico y cultural de la Humanidad pueda reflejar plenamente las voces y visiones de todas las personas, independientemente de su género. Sólo así podremos garantizar que nuestro patrimonio artístico siga inspirando a las generaciones futuras.
